What is Thymosin Alpha-1?
Thymosin Alpha-1 (Tα1) is an acetylated peptide of 28 amino acids. It was first isolated from thymosin fraction 5, an extract of the thymus gland, and is cleaved naturally from its precursor prothymosin alpha.
A synthetic version, thymalfasin, is approved as a medicine in a number of countries outside the EU. Pepspan supplies Thymosin Alpha-1 as a lyophilised powder with 10 mg per vial for research.
Thymosin Alpha-1 in research
Research focuses on T-cell maturation and on toll-like receptor signalling in dendritic cells, through which Tα1 influences cytokine production. Cell and animal models study it in viral infection, vaccine response and immune ageing.
Clinical studies of thymalfasin exist for chronic hepatitis B and as an add-on in other settings, with mixed results. The peptide sold here is a research chemical and not approved for any use in humans in the EU.
