Our bacteriostatic water is sterile water for injection with 0.9% benzyl alcohol, in a 10 ml glass vial with a rubber stopper. The current batch was measured by Janoshik at 8.53 mg/ml benzyl alcohol (0.85%).

Bacteriostatic water in research

Benzyl alcohol acts as a preservative: it inhibits the growth of bacteria introduced when the stopper is pierced repeatedly. That is why a vial of bacteriostatic water can be used several times, while plain sterile water is meant for a single use.

For most lyophilised peptides, bacteriostatic water is the recommended diluent because it keeps the solution usable for several weeks at 2–8 °C. A few peptides that are sensitive to benzyl alcohol need other solvents; check the literature for your compound.

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which inhibits bacterial growth after the vial has been opened.
