What is MOTS-c?

MOTS-c (mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA-c) is a peptide of 16 amino acids. It was described in 2015 as one of the first mitochondrial-derived peptides, encoded within the 12S ribosomal RNA gene of the mitochondrial genome.

Under metabolic stress, MOTS-c can move from the cytoplasm into the nucleus, where it has been linked to the regulation of stress-response genes. Pepspan supplies MOTS-c as a lyophilised powder with 10 mg per vial.

MOTS-c in research

In mouse models, MOTS-c has been studied for its effects on insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism and the AMPK pathway, as well as on physical performance in older animals. Because of these findings it is often called an exercise mimetic in the literature.

Its natural blood levels have been reported to decline with age and to rise after exercise. Human data remain early and observational; MOTS-c is sold here for laboratory research on metabolism and ageing only.
